Similar to most animals, summers are challenging for birds. Here are some tips you can try for your bird babies.

1. Temperature control

Birds are very sensitive to temperature and as such, temperature control is vital to keep them comfortable in the heat. When you switch on the fan or the AC, make sure that the vent is not directly aimed at your bird – it could make it very uncomfortable. Observe your bird’s reaction as you change the fan speed and temperature, it could easily make your bird overheat or make it feel cold. Also, ensure that your bird is secure in a cage when you switch on the fan, so that they don’t get hit by the fan blades. This could very easily kill them.

2. Secure your doors and windows

Normally, our doors and windows are kept open in the summer to allow for ventilation. However, these could be safety hazards for your bird. Make sure that there are no holes or tears in your window sheets, and that your bird is in its cage (or unable to fly) when the doors and windows are kept open. Your bird should be kept in a place where smoke, disinfectant sprays, harmful gases,  etc. cannot reach them. Also take precautions so that things like rats, snakes and other harmful creatures are unable to get to your bird.

3. Lots of water and shade

Make sure there’s plenty  of water for your bird for drinking and bathing.  If you keep bird baths and feeders in  your garden or terrace, ensure that they’re  full of cool water, so that your bird keeps cool and the  growth of algae (which can harm your bird) is discouraged. Keep the bird feeder in a shaded area, and make sure that your bird gets good shade throughout the day.

4. Safety outdoors

It’s important for birds to sun themselves, as they get their vitamin D the same way we do. Sun exposure is also essential for them to maintain their feathers, and for their overall health and happiness. In the summer, this can be a challenge. It’s important that your bird gets their required sun exposure, but not during midday and afternoons. The best time for this would be in the early mornings – starting from around sunrise. This is especially important for bird parents who keep their birds indoors all day. Take extra precautions regarding your bird’s flight risk during this time.
