Whether you’re planning on adopting a lively kitten or a wise old cat, you’re probably super excited to have a feline companion at home. But it’s important to understand that cats are nimble creatures known for their curiosity and get into trouble more often than we expect them to.
They can easily climb trees, jump on roofs, drop objects, and even squeeze through tiny spaces. They can even get tangled up in cords or curtains, knock over breakables, and can actually hurt themselves in the process. That’s why it’s important to take steps to cat-proof your house to protect them from harm.
You can start by making sure that there are no open windows or doors that cats can escape from and that any balconies or roofs are securely fenced.
Make sure to cat-proof your couch especially if it is a recliner because cats can get stuck in them. Cover your electric cords, cables and phone chargers. Anchor any unsteady, heavy objects like flat screen TVs or anything else that can fall on top of your cat. It’s also important to keep harmful chemicals and plants out of their reach, and make sure that the house is free of sharp objects or small spaces that cats could get stuck in.
It may seem like a lot of work but it’s worth it to keep your cat safe. And remember, cats are excellent climbers and passionate explorers – so even if you think your home is safe for cats, it’s good to keep an eye on them periodically.
